Root canal treatment is an endodontic procedure used when the pulp tissue inside the tooth (the nerves and blood vessels) becomes infected or severely damaged. The goal of the treatment is to eliminate the infection, relieve pain and preserve the natural tooth whenever possible, avoiding the need for tooth extraction.
At Dentopol, root canal treatment in Istanbul is planned after a detailed clinical examination, vitality tests and radiological assessment. At our clinics in Maltepe and Ümraniye, endodontic treatments are individually planned based on the structure of the tooth and the level of infection.
For patients living in Europe or the UK, treatment planning can often begin before travelling to Istanbul. Your existing dental X-rays can be reviewed through a remote preliminary assessment, or you can attend a free consultation at our Hanau clinic in Germany to meet our specialist dental team. This helps provide a clearer understanding of the treatment plan before your visit to Istanbul.
If you are experiencing tooth pain, sensitivity or dental abscess, early assessment can often help preserve the natural tooth.
What Is Root Canal Treatment?
When deep decay, trauma or infection damages the pulp tissue inside a tooth, bacteria can spread within the root canal system and cause inflammation or infection. Root canal treatment removes this infected tissue and cleans the internal structure of the tooth.
The main stages of root canal treatment include:
- Removal of infected pulp tissue
- Shaping and cleaning of the root canals
- Disinfection of the canal system
- Filling the canal space with biocompatible material
Once the infection is removed and the tooth is properly restored, the natural tooth can continue functioning for many years.
Types of Root Canal Treatment
Root canal therapy can be planned in different ways depending on the condition of the tooth and whether it has been treated previously.
- Primary Root Canal Treatment
This is performed on teeth that have never undergone root canal therapy. The infected pulp tissue is removed and the canals are cleaned and filled.
2. Root Canal Retreatment
If infection returns in a tooth that has previously been treated, the existing filling material may be removed and the root canal system cleaned and sealed again.
3. Root Canal Treatment in Multi-Rooted Teeth
Molars often contain several root canals. These cases usually require more detailed radiological analysis and careful treatment planning.
4. Root Canal Treatment After Dental Trauma
Teeth that have been damaged by impact or fracture may develop pulp damage and require root canal treatment.
5. Apical Surgery (Apicoectomy)
In some cases where infection cannot be resolved through conventional root canal treatment, a minor surgical procedure may be performed at the root tip.
Aftercare Following Root Canal Treatment
Some mild sensitivity may occur for a short period after the procedure.
Recommended precautions include:
- avoiding very hard foods in the first few days
- chewing carefully on the treated tooth
- completing the planned final restoration
- attending scheduled follow-up appointments
Regular dental check-ups help ensure the long-term success of the treated tooth.
